This sprightly adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s story—oft-considered an oblique self-portrait portraying the author's discomfiture living as a homosexual man in the Victorian era, and a heartbreaking parable about the quixotic search for true love—was eyed by Disney as far back as the days of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, finally surfacing in 1989.
Metrograph presents an ultra-rare screening on a pristine 35mm print, a rarity due to the studio’s tight control of their classic animation titles, almost never shown theatrically following the advent of home video. There’s a hot crustacean band, sure, but also a keening grasp of the angst, loneliness, and longing in Anderson's tale, encapsulated in Ariel’s dream of being “Part of Your World,” a highlight of Alan Mencken and Howard Ashman's superlative songbook.
