DIRECTOR: MIKIO NARUSE

CAST: HIDEKO TAKAMINE, YûZô KAYAMA, MITSUKO KUSABUE

Takemine Hideko, one of the supreme stars of postwar Japanese cinema, plays a war widow who has diligently rebuilt her late husband’s family store from the ruins. Society is rapidly changing, but not so fast that a budding romance with her younger brother-in-law wouldn’t still be frowned on. One of Naruse’s final films, which exemplifies his style as described by Akira Kurosawa: “Like a great river with a calm surface and a raging current in its depths.”
