CAST: THE DRAMATICS, THE STAPLE SINGERS, KIM WESTON
One of the all-time greatest performance films is also one of the greatest non-fiction films, too. Stax Records stages a super-concert of black music and pride at the Los Angeles Coliseum (intercut with a blazing Richard Pryor monologue), with speaker Jesse Jackson and Isaac Hayes, The Staples Singers, The Bar-Kays, Carla Thomas and Rufus Thomas, who invites the audience on the field to do the funky chicken, and then coaxes an umbrella-wielding holdout back into the stands with the help of the crowd.
Wattstax is screening as part of Metrograph A to Z, a collection of films we think everybody should see.
