On the hunt for a Pulitzer Prize, crime reporter Johnny Barrett (Peter Breck) has his bump-and-grind dancer girlfriend (Constance Towers) check him into a mental ward where he’ll have access to the witness to an unsolved murder. Instead of a single scoop, however, he finds his sanity taxed by encounters with an infantilized atomic scientist, a black Ku Klux Klansman, and a delusional southerner still fighting the Civil War—a version of an America on the brink of lunacy.
