A cellist from Prague goes to play a gig and visit old friends in a rural village, his glamorous mistress in tow, and together they play music, drink, dine, and indulge in bouts of nostalgia. Passer is interested less in dramatic incident here than in the gradual revelation of character, and with the assistance of the great Miroslav Ondricek (cinematographer of Forman’s Amadeus and Taking Off), he creates a beautiful, rueful portrait of the fullness of empty leisure hours, against a bucolic backdrop.
