DIRECTOR: DENNIS HOPPER

CAST: DON CHEADLE, SEAN PENN, ROBERT DUVALL

He’d been there for the punks and the bikers, and Hopper was there at the dawn of gangster rap, too. His comeback movie, set in a gang war-torn L.A., features a hip-hop-heavy soundtrack and Don Cheadle as a Crip capo, but the middle-aged Hopper is equally interested in establishment cop culture here, riding along with veteran Robert Duvall and hothead rookie Sean Penn as they patrol the streets of East and South L.A. A hit thanks to its timeliness and the propulsive camerawork of DP Haskell Wexler, it put Hopper, not appearing in a film he directed for the first time, suddenly in hot demand.
